What type of manufacturing is die casting?

Nov,13 2023

Die casting is a metal casting process that is classified as a precision casting method. It falls under the category of metal casting processes, which are techniques for shaping metal objects by melting the material and then pouring it into a mold. Die casting specifically involves forcing molten metal into a mold cavity at high pressure.

The die casting process is particularly suitable for the production of complex and geometrically intricate metal parts with high accuracy and repeatability. It is commonly used for manufacturing components such as engine parts, housings, and other metal parts for various industries, including automotive, aerospace, electronics, and consumer goods.

There are two main types of die casting:

Hot Chamber Die Casting:

In hot chamber die casting, the injection system is immersed in the molten metal bath. This method is typically used for metals with lower melting points, such as zinc and magnesium.

Cold Chamber Die Casting:

In cold chamber die casting, the molten metal is ladled into the injection system. This method is used for metals with higher melting points, such as aluminum and copper.

Die casting provides advantages such as high production rates, close dimensional accuracy, and the ability to produce thin-walled sections. It is a widely used manufacturing process for creating metal parts with excellent surface finishes and tight tolerances.
